Transportation Routes to DaigoJi Temple
DaigoJi Temple is located far from the city center and is one of the early blooming cherry blossom spots. The cherry blossoms at DaigoJi Temple became famous because of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Those who plan to visit Kyoto in late March usually include DaigoJi Temple as one of the highlights for cherry blossom viewing… This article, “Transportation Routes to DaigoJi Temple”, introduces how to get to DaigoJi Temple.
DaigoJi Temple is located in Kyoto City. If you are coming from other prefectures, please find a way to get to Kyoto Station or along the Kyoto City subway line, such as Shijo Station or Sanjo Keihan Station. There are several main methods to get from Kyoto Station to DaigoJi Temple to enjoy cherry blossoms.
1. If you take the subway from Kyoto Station, you will need to transfer to the Tozai Line at Karasuma Oike Station and then take it to Daigo Station (T03). It will take approximately 36 minutes and cost ¥320 in fare.
2. Take the JR train and transfer to the subway from Kyoto Station. Take the JR train to Yamashina, then walk to Yamashina Station (T07) and take the subway to Daigo Station (T03). It will take approximately 18 minutes and cost ¥450.
3. Take the JR train and transfer to the Keihan bus from Kyoto Station. After arriving at Yamashina Station, take the Keihan bus 22, 22A, 24, or 24A to Daigoji Temple (bus stop: Daigo Sanboin). The estimated travel time is unclear (as it cannot be found and I haven’t personally taken it), and the fare is ¥410 (JR ¥190, Keihan bus ¥220).
4. Take the Keihan Bus – Daigoji Line (Official Website) from Kyoto Station, Hachijo Exit H4 bus stop, and board the Kyoto Daigoji Line bus (301) to Daigoji Temple. The estimated travel time is about 30 minutes, and the fare is ¥280. (You can use the Kyoto Subway and Bus One-Day Pass or ICOCA card; for the return journey, you can take bus 301 or 305 from Daigoji Temple back to Kyoto Station.)
Apart from 3 and 4, all the places mentioned are accessible by taking the Kyoto City Subway to Daigo Station. However, there are two ways to get from Daigo Station to DaigoJi Temple.
A. Take the Daigo Transportation Bus, which costs ¥200 for a one-way trip and ¥300 for a round trip. Buses run every 10 minutes and the ride takes approximately 5 minutes.
B. Alternatively, you can walk to the temple, but please note that there is a slight uphill climb. It is estimated to take about 15 minutes on foot.
Next, let me introduce these two methods:
A. Taking the Tigo Traffic Bus.
After exiting the subway station (Exit 2), you will immediately see signs.
You can see a bunch of people queuing up.
If you want to take the bus, just follow the line and get ready with your money. Someone will come to sell you the ticket.
People wearing uniforms
If you board the train from the Tezukuri Station, you just need to show the driver when getting off. However, when returning from the Tezukuri Temple, the driver will collect it when you get off.
Because it is a small bus, not many people can sit at once. If there are many people, it is not recommended to waste time queuing. Check the schedule of the Tigo Transportation Bus here.
B. If you’re not looking to save money while hiking, you can follow my route. I also started from Exit 2, then turned right. Don’t join the queue, just keep walking straight. When you reach the intersection, turn right and continue walking uphill. That’s it!
Scenic Views Along the Way
Please note that we will pass through this elevated road and we need to cross underneath it.
Not long after, you will see the magnificent DaigoJi Temple~
If you return the same way on the way back, you will also pass under the elevated road. However, after passing under the elevated road, at the first intersection, you can make a left turn. This is the situation for making a left turn.
There will be a map here, and I’m also afraid of getting lost~
Continue straight ahead. The first intersection on the right is accessible for vehicles, but I suggest not taking this route. Instead, take the second one, which goes through the community’s road. This road is only for pedestrians, and vehicles are not allowed to pass through. Please refer to the situation depicted in the following image (this image is obtained from Google Maps).
Because I left Tōfuku-ji Temple in the evening, taking photos downwards would result in backlighting. Therefore, I took this photo on my way back down.
Keep walking straight ahead and you will come across a shopping mall that is integrated with the subway.
In front is the shopping mall AL Plaza… Once you enter AL Plaza, you can take the escalator down and then take the subway.
Above is a simple introduction to the route from Daigo Station on the Kyoto City Subway to DaigoJi Temple. In the diagram below, the pink line represents the route from Daigo Station to DaigoJi Temple, while the orange line represents the route from DaigoJi Temple back to Daigo Station.
