Sapporo Suburbs – Jozankei Onsen Hotel- Hanamomiji

Jozankei Onsen is a renowned hot spring area near Sapporo,
and it takes about an hour to drive there from downtown Sapporo.
If you don’t drive, you can also take a bus, which takes only 60 to 75 minutes to reach.
It’s a very accessible hot spring area.
This time, we stayed at the Hanamomiji, an annex of Jozankei Onsen Hotel SHIKAnoYU.
There’s a parking lot right in front of the hotel, and parking is free.

Lobby and Facilities

Even before entering the hotel, the staff will greet you at the door.
Upon entering, you’ll see coats and rain boots available. If you want to explore the Snow Light Path but lack sufficient warm clothing,
you can borrow the coats and rain boots provided by the hotel.

From 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the hotel offers special steamed bread in the lobby for guests who are either staying or waiting to check in.

Lobby Reception.

The lobby has a spacious seating area.

Lounge area, offering drinks and music.
Service hours are from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

There are some magazines available.

Beverage and Snack Area.

Tea bags, offering three different flavors of black tea.

Coffee options include mocha, cocoa, au lait, and American.

Drinks include iced water, grape juice, and apple juice.

Snacks include nuts, cookies, confetti, and bananas.

Next to the elevator, there’s a shop.
Service hours are from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM and 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

Room

This time, we stayed on the 11th floor, and each room has an additional wooden door outside.

Upon entering the room, you’ll see storage cabinets and a shoe cabinet.
The storage cabinet contains towels and bath towels.
The shoe cabinet has flip-flops and regular slippers, which you can wear inside the hotel.

View from the entrance towards the room.

Tea area, equipped with a hot water bottle, a capsule coffee machine, and a thermos.
The thermos contains iced water.

The cabinet behind holds tea sets and tea leaves.

Tea leaves include green tea and roasted tea.

Below is a refrigerator, but the drinks inside are charged separately.

Record what you drink on a record sheet, and hand it to the reception when you check out for billing.

Bathroom, equipped with bath towels and towels.
However, the hot spring area also provides bath towels and towels, so you don’t need to bring your own.

Other toiletries are also provided.

Bathroom

Let’s take a look at the room.
The room is about 12.5 tatami mats in size.

There are snacks on the table.

These snacks need to be heated.
So, disassemble the snack setup: the bottom layer is an alcohol gel, the middle layer is water, and the top layer is a steamer.
Light the alcohol gel, and once the flame goes out, the steamed bread are ready to eat.
One of them is chestnut-flavored, which I found quite delicious.

Next to it is a cabinet.
The cabinet contains pillows, futons, and blankets,
and surprisingly, a small TV!

Yukata are also stored here.
Various sizes are available.

There are two chairs here, convenient for working XD

Behind is a wardrobe and haori jackets.

The haori jackets are to be worn over the yukata and can be used inside the hotel or worn outside.

Underneath is a safe, and its design is quite unique

Phone, CD, and Bluetooth speaker

An air purifier and humidifier placed in the corner.
A reminder: if you stay at a hot spring hotel in winter, make sure to turn on the humidifier, or you might wake up feeling too hot at night, even if you haven’t turned on the air conditioning.
If you don’t see a humidifier in the room, you can ask the front desk; they usually have one available for loan.

The bathroom is quite spacious and much better designed than many business hotels.
For instance, the flush switch is not too low.
The toilet paper holder is conveniently located on the left, making it easy to reach.

While we were having dinner, the hotel staff came in to make the bed. This is what it looked like afterward.

Dinner

This is the entire dinner spread.

Menu items.

Appetizers and pickles,
including Hokkigai clam salad, chestnuts, bamboo leaf sushi, chicken rolls, duck breast, salmon and radish rolls…

Star anise bamboo leaf sushi.
It tastes quite similar to persimmon leaf sushi.

This is a sashimi platter for two,
featuring shrimp, Hokkigai clam, tuna, whelk, and sea urchin.

Fresh sea urchin.

This kamameshi is also delicious.
It contains Variegate Venus, seaweed, and onions.
Usually, the cooking starts when you begin eating dinner, and once the flame goes out, the rice is ready.
I forgot to take a picture of the cooked rice and just ate it all T_T

Tokachi beef.

Lightly grilled on a iron griddle.

The texture is excellent, very tasty.

Sake-steamed Ezo abalone with sea urchin.

Matsuba crab and hairy crab platter.
Since I love crab, this dish and the beef are my personal favorites.

“Kichiji” fish, first fried then simmered, has a unique chewy texture.

Tepou soup.

Dessert is pumpkin pudding, which I found quite tasty. It would be even better with a bit more pudding.

Breakfast

Let’s take a look at breakfast.
Breakfast is a self-serve buffet.

The layout is well-organized, so it doesn’t feel crowded.

There are plenty of pickles.

Other foods include tamagoyaki, braised pork, chicken nuggets, fried shrimp, tofu.
I personally recommend the fried shrimp and chicken nuggets. The shrimp, though small, has a nice texture.

Grilled salmon, onsen egg, grated yam, udon.
The vinegar rice in the lower left corner can be paired with the nearby yellowtail and pickled salmon to make your own chirashi sushi.

Additionally, there are bread, porridge, curry, corn soup, and soy milk miso soup.
The corn soup is incredibly rich!!

Fruits and cereals, fresh salad.
Drinks include coffee, Hokkaido milk, and various juices.

Finally, I grabbed a bit of everything.
Including porridge, udon, corn soup, tamagoyaki, hot dogs, fried shrimp, salmon, corn kernels, chicken nuggets, Hokkaido milk.

And a bowl of curry rice.
The Japanese curry isn’t too strong, and I found it quite delicious. Highly recommended!!
