Kyushu – From Hakata Station to Dazaifu

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is a sanctuary of learning, culture, and art, and a popular attraction in Fukuoka prefecture.
Most people visit Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine as a day trip, and often choose Hakata as their starting point. There are three main ways to get to Dazaifu from Hakata.

1. From Hakata Bus Terminal 1F, Bus Stop 11, take the Dazaifu Liner Bus “Tabito“.
Duration: 40 minutes
Fare: ¥610

2. From Hakata, take the JR to “Futsukaichi Station “, then walk to Nishitetsu’s “Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station”, and transfer to the Nishitetsu Dazaifu Line to “Dazaifu” Station, then walk to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
Total time: approximately 85 minutes (actual walking experience)
Total one-way fare: ¥450 (JR ¥280, Nishitetsu ¥170)

3. Take the Fukuoka City Subway to “Tenjin” walk to “Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station”, transfer to the Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta Line directly to “Dazaifu Station”, then walk to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
(Some trains do not go directly, requiring a transfer at Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station)
Total time: approximately 46-60 minutes (estimated time)
Total one-way fare: ¥630 (Subway ¥210, Nishitetsu ¥420)

Travel Process to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Since I only have experience taking the JR to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, I can only explain this route…

Before taking the train, study the route map to confirm which train to take and the fare !!

Buy a ticket.

Check the timetable.

Pass through the ticket gate.

Go to the platform and board the train.

Ride the train.

Inside the train.

Arrived at Futsukaichi.
Why did I take this photo? Because I decided to visit Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine on a whim without any prior research. I remembered seeing this signboard the previous day when I went to Takeo Onsen, so I knew to get off at Futsukaichi !!

However, getting from JR Futsukaichi to Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is not just a simple walk
You need to transfer !!
As mentioned earlier, you need to walk to Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station to catch the train.

Futsukaichi Chuo-dori Shopping Street.

There was an event today, so it looked a bit different.

Seeing this group of elderly men performing reminded me of Mr.Children’s “Kurumi”.

Continue towards Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station.

Finally saw Nishitetsu Futsukaichi Station.

Check the route map and fare again.

Buy a ticket.

Take the local train here, and you can reach Dazaifu in about 6 minutes.

Inside the train.

Arrived at the station, and you can see the signs after getting off.
Walk out of the station, and you are on the approach to Tenmangu Shrine~
You can start shopping !!
