This “Kyoto Ramen Kenkyujo” was recommended to me by a taxi driver when I asked for a recommendation while riding in a taxi in Kyoto. The restaurant is a bit out of the way and a little pricey, but the food is delicious. Now that I think about it, I’m starting to feel a bit hungry.
This ramen shop is called “Kyoto Ramen Kenkyujo” (Japanese: 京都ラーメン研究所). It takes about 13 minutes to walk from Kyoto Station, Hachijo Exit.
Since I arrived around 5 o’clock, there weren’t many customers yet.
The shop is small, but it has also been visited by celebrities. There are some autographs hanging on the wall, but I don’t recognize any of them.
The Menu in the restaurant.
I ordered this, which was also recommended by a taxi driver. The price was ¥950 for the special char siu ramen (currently increased to ¥1050 as of November 16, 2014).
The flavor on the table
This pepper sauce looks very spicy.
Garlic paste
The ramen has arrived, let’s take a look. There are two types of char siu, one is regular thin slices of char siu, and the other is special char siu. It feels like it has been grilled over charcoal because it is filled with the aroma of grilled meat.
Eggs, they are just ordinary eggs.
Take a look at these three slices of special roasted pork, they are thick and juicy.
On average, each slice has a thickness of approximately 0.5 centimeters or more.
Due to the even roasting, there is no burnt taste, only a fragrant aroma.
This is a regular char siu, slightly thinner.
Its broth is slightly oilier, but not rich enough to be overwhelming.
The noodles are decent, with a firm texture. They have a slight lack of chewiness, perhaps because I took too long to take photos~
Let’s have some char siu next~ Although some of it is fatty meat, it doesn’t taste greasy at all~ It feels like eating grilled meat~ Amazing!!
Finally, of course, it’s time to finish the meal~

Personal Food Rating: ★★★★☆ (4.2)
Comment:
It’s really difficult to rate this one because its char siu is quite unique and makes you want to have more.
Also, among the ramen I’ve had so far, it stands out as something special.
That’s why I’ve decided to give it a rating of 4.2
if it were 4.5, it would be on par with Ishigaki Island’s Soki soba (Japanese: ソーキそば).
As for the broth, I had just come down from Takaoyama in the rain and hadn’t eaten anything all day, so I was starving.
Therefore, the broth really suited my taste, especially with the addition of some garlic paste. The flavor was even more amazing!
Rating Criteria:
Five stars: Super delicious; after eating, it will make you want to go back for more.
Four stars: Delicious; after eating, you’ll feel satisfied, but it won’t leave a lasting impression.
Three stars: Not bad; if you happen to be nearby, it’s worth a try.
Two stars: Average; if you don’t want to take any risks, you can give it a go.
One star: Not my cup of tea; potential disappointment.
